"Donation is a huge help": ONEJOON supports community social work in Göttingen with 1,000 euros
Göttingen. The industrial furnace construction company ONEJOON from Bovenden supports the Göttingen Community Social Work (Straso) with a donation of 1,000 euros. Straso is an institution of the Diakonieverband in the Evangelical Lutheran Church District of Göttingen-Münden. Its mission is to improve the living situation of people affected or threatened by homelessness. It does this by offering a range of services, including a post office address, a day centre, street work, accommodation, emergency medical care and breakfast and lunch services.
Donation helps with services
"The donation is a huge help with the additional services," says Mike Wacker, head of department and social worker at Straso. The money donated by ONEJOON will be used to keep the breakfast and lunch tables open. In addition, part of it could also be used for the housing placement project. According to Wacker, projects like this can only be financed through donations. "About 40 clients come to Straso and its services every day," the social worker reports from everyday life at the facility. Together with volunteers, a team of 20 is there for these people.
At least 500 homeless people in Göttingen
Mike Wacker, who has been working in the social sector for about 20 years, estimates the number of homeless people in Göttingen to be at least 500. Every person who does not have a secure place to live under tenancy law counts as homeless. "The people you see in the inner city are just the tip of the iceberg," he explains. Most of them are covertly homeless, sleeping with acquaintances, friends or relatives. Some of them also suffer from severe mental illnesses and often have a family history of addiction or drug abuse, which makes it even more difficult to break out of the situation. Wacker can clearly identify the main cause for the situation of many clients: "There is too little affordable housing – and only with a flat and thus an anchor and a haven of peace can other difficulties be adequately solved."
Supporting social projects on one's own doorstep
By donating to social institutions like Straso, ONEJOON aims to support important initiatives in the region. "In addition to the social sector, we also donate to environmental initiatives and associations," explains Tobias Koch, Team Leader Marketing at ONEJOON. One can contribute to the well-being of the people living here through concrete deeds.
