Validation of simulation results on a test rotary kiln

We are looking for our project "Validation of simulation results on a test rotary kiln"

an interested student (m/f/d) and offer the following project, study or final thesis:

Aim of the work 

We would like to validate relevant parameters determined by simulation on a test rotary kiln. The focus is on parameters such as the residence time and the heating behavior of various products as a function of process, kiln and product characteristics. One aim of the investigation is to find out with what accuracy the dependency between tube speed and the resulting particle motion pattern was captured by the simulation model. The knowledge gained is then to be implemented in a corresponding CFD model. Subsequently, the boundary areas between the CFD model and reality are to be determined.


Structure of the work packages

  • Step 1: You find a suitable method to measure the product temperature for the existing rotary kiln at different points in the direction of the product flow.
  • Step 2: You apply and implement the method and determine residence times of different products depending on the particle motion form.
  • Step 3: You determine the product temperatures as a function of the particle motion form and the heat input.
    Then you determine the boundary areas between your CFD model and reality and draw conclusions.

This assignment is suitable as a study, project or final thesis and can be adapted in scope as required.

Your profile

For the processing of the topic you fit well to us if you

  • You are a student (m/f/d) in the field of process engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science (or related courses of study)
  • have very good knowledge in the field of thermodynamics, with a focus on heat transfer and transient heating processes, and good knowledge in the field of mechanical process engineering (particle movement, particle size distribution)
  • maybe you already had some experience with CFD simulations (is an advantage) and
  • have a very structured and independent way of working

If in addition

  • good MS-Office skills
  • good knowledge of English and
  • Good communication and coordination skills

can be brought in, ... perfect.
