Patented method and apparatus for cooling strips, in particular saw strips

Until the early 2000s, bimetallic saw bands were hardened and tempered in a discontinuous process. In a first, continuous step, hardening took place in a pull-through hardening furnace and a pull-through furnace for short-time tempering, each followed by cooling. Subsequently, the saw bands were coiled and tempered several times into several coils in shaft tempering furnaces in batch operation. 

The invention of Ruhstrat's patented cooling system resulted in several advantages: 

• cooling was done with water only, the use of environmentally harmful refrigerants was no longer necessary, and the plant technology was simplified
• with the new contact cooling stage, it was possible (and still is possible today) to influence the so-called camber of the saw bands; the further processing of the bands was thus simplified
• with the new cooling section, it was possible to convert the quenching and tempering of the saw bands to a continuous process. This resulted in considerable cost savings due to lower energy consumption, shorter throughput time to the finished quenched and tempered band saw blade, and lower personnel and maintenance costs
